L-PRES unveils plans to modernise livestock production in Borno

The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project in Borno has called for a shift from traditional livestock practices to modern methods to improve productivity and strengthen the livestock value chain.
Dr Makinta Ali, State Coordinator of L-PRES, made the call at the project’s fourth stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Maiduguri.
The meeting, themed “Strengthening Partnership for Sustainable Livestock Development,” brought together stakeholders from Northern and Central Borno to discuss measures for sustaining progress recorded in the livestock sector.
Ali said L-PRES, in partnership with the Borno Government, was committed to promoting sustainable livestock production through improved infrastructure and modern technology and expanded commercial opportunities for livestock owners, traders, and pastoralists
He said the project covered various aspects of livestock development, including dairy and meat production, as well as small ruminants such as sheep and goats.
According to him, the project adopted a community-focused approach aimed at promoting sustainable growth in the livestock sector.
He explained that while the project prioritised interventions in crop and animal production in 2025, its 2026 work plan would focus largely on major infrastructure development.
“Planned projects include grazing-related infrastructure such as water points for herders, modern abattoirs, and veterinary clinics.
“We are also developing organised pasture areas with fenced land, planted grasses and a reliable water supply,” he said.
The coordinator said L-PRES was also promoting value addition through the provision of equipment for processing animal feed supplements and encouraging the use of crop residues as alternative livestock feed.
He added that the project was emphasising livestock breed improvement through artificial insemination.
The Deputy Governor, Mr Umar Kadafur, represented by the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Alhaji Mohammed Lawan, commended L-PRES for its interventions.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustaining efforts aimed at improving livestock production in Borno.
Stakeholders at the meeting also emphasised stronger collaboration to enhance productivity and strengthen the livestock value chain in the state.
