The Borno State Police Command has arrested six suspects over the alleged theft of a mobile phone and the subsequent withdrawal of ₦5.65 million from the victim’s bank account.

The command said the arrests followed an investigation into alleged phone theft, criminal conspiracy, fraud, and unlawful withdrawal of funds.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the incident occurred on October 13, when the victim, identified as Abba K., reportedly discovered that his Infinix Smart 8 phone was missing after travelling in a commercial tricycle along Damboa Road, Maiduguri.

The victim subsequently reported the incident to the police, prompting the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, to direct operatives of the Command’s VCRU Unit to investigate the matter.

The statement said the operatives used digital forensic analysis, intelligence gathering and other investigative methods to identify and arrest six suspects allegedly linked to the crime.

During the investigation, the suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in the theft and the subsequent withdrawal of ₦5.65 million from the victim’s bank account. They also allegedly disclosed that the money had been shared among themselves.

The police said the stolen phone and the full amount of ₦5.65 million had been recovered.

The command added that the suspects would be charged to court after the investigation was concluded.

It reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state and urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly when using public transportation.

The police also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station, warning that appropriate legal action would be taken against anyone found involved in criminal activities.
