Learning without fear: NGO Advocates for Safe Schools in Yobe

The North-East Youth Initiative Development, a leading advocate for youth development and education, has taken a bold step towards ensuring safe schools in Yobe State.

At a media roundtable discussion, Executive Director Dauda Gombe emphasized the organization’s commitment to promoting a secure learning environment.

“We believe that every child deserves to attend school without fear of intimidation, harassment, or attacks,” he said.

The discussion focused on two key issues: adopting the national policy on self-care and violence-free schools, and leveraging media support to hold the government accountable for prioritizing education sector funding.

Gombe highlighted the organization’s dedication to working with stakeholders to ensure Yobe adopts the national policy, given the state’s history of school attacks.

“We must put in place all recommendations to make our schools safe, secure, and violence-free,” he stressed.

A representative of Civil Society Organisation, Mr Muhammed Kuchichi suggested some measures to improving security in schools to include employing security guards and building their capacity to identify and respond to polential threats effectively.

He alao suggested installation of surveillance cameras, access control systems, and panic alarms to enhance real-time monitoring and response capabilities.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe Council explained to role of media addressing the problem.

He also reiterated that media practitioners were always ready for any positive collaboration move the state forward.
