After Pressure, Tinubu Orders Release of Minors Detained in Bad Governance Protests
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of all minors detained during the nationwide protests against rising living costs in August. Information Minister Mohammed Idris announced the decision on Monday, stating, “The president has directed that these children, these minors, be released immediately.”
At least 76 individuals, including 30 minors, faced treason charges after participating in the demonstrations, which turned deadly in some instances. The arraignment of the minors last Friday sparked widespread public outrage and condemnation of the government’s actions.
The protests, fueled by frustration over economic hardship and a lack of opportunities for young people, erupted in major cities like Abuja and Lagos. Amnesty International reported at least 22 fatalities during the clashes between protesters and security forces.
Despite the public outcry and international condemnation, President Tinubu remains committed to his economic reforms, which he argues are necessary to stabilize the nation’s economy. However, Nigerians continue to grapple with a severe cost-of-living crisis and widespread insecurity, particularly in the northern region, where armed gangs have terrorized communities and kidnapped civilians.
