Fahimta Women and Youth Development Initiative (FAWOYDI), a civil society organization, has strongly condemned the sexist and discriminatory attitudes displayed by public and political office holders towards women in Nigeria.

Mrs Dinah Daniel, Executive Director (ED) of the Organisation gave the condemnation while celebrating 2025 International Women Day on Saturday in Bauchi

She emphasised that women are constitutionally entitled to fundamental human rights, just like their male counterparts, and it is essential to recognize and respect their dignity.

Daniel urged public and political office holders to refrain from making sexist and discriminatory remarks, which can have a profound impact on women’s self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being.

The Executive Director commented on a recent incident involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio highlighted the persistent trend of gender discrimination and verbal harassment in Nigeria’s political institutions.

“Akpabio’s sexist remark, telling Akpoti-Uduaghan, “We’re not in a nightclub,” during a plenary session, was widely condemned by over 300 women groups, who demanded an unconditional apology,” she said

Daniel stressed that such attitudes can perpetuate a culture of violence against women, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, and other forms of abuse.

The ED called on public and political office holders to stop making sexist remarks and instead undergo training and education on gender sensitivity, equality, and human rights.

Furthermore, She urged public and political office holders to promote and support policies and programs that advance women’s rights and empowerment, and to lead by example by demonstrating respect, dignity, and inclusivity towards women.

The FAWOYDI also urged stakeholders, including civil society organizations, community leaders, and individuals, to speak out against sexism and misogyny, support and amplify women’s voices,

“Advocate for policies and programs that promote women’s rights and empowerment, and engage in dialogue and education to raise awareness about the impact of sexism and misogyny on women’s lives,” she said
