Tinubu Brokers Peace Talks on Rivers Political Crisis – Onanuga
By Baba Dan’iya
President Bola Tinubu has initiated a fresh reconciliation process to resolve the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State.
The latest intervention was disclosed by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, via a post on his verified Facebook page on Friday.
According to Onanuga, President Tinubu convened a closed-door meeting on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with all major stakeholders in the Rivers political impasse in attendance.
Those present at the high-level talks included Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Martins Amaewhule, and other members of the Assembly.
Onanuga described the engagement as part of ongoing efforts by the President to restore peace and political stability in the state.
You recalls that on March 18, President Tinubu declared a political state of emergency in Rivers, during which Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly were suspended from office.
Although details of Thursday’s meeting were not made public, Onanuga stated that the talks were cordial, with the President urging all parties to prioritise the interests of Rivers people over personal ambitions.
Our correspondent reports that the crisis in Rivers State stems from a rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, over control of political structures and legislative authority in the state.
Thursday’s meeting marks another major step in the President’s mediatory efforts to de-escalate the political tension in one of Nigeria’s most strategic oil-producing states.
As at the time of filing this report, no official communique had been released from the Presidency.
