VC Bauchi University urges return to founding values

The Vice Chancellor of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Professor Fatimah Tahir, has called on Nigerians to return to the foundational values exemplified by the country’s early leaders, especially Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

She made the call at the inaugural memorial lecture held in honour of the late nationalist, organised by the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Centre for Peace and Security Studies, SAZU, at the weekend in Bauchi.

Tahir described the event as a solemn occasion for reflection, remembrance, and recommitment to the values that once united the nation.

She extolled the virtues of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, highlighting his humility, diplomatic finesse, and unwavering dedication to peace and national unity.

The VC noted that Balewa’s name remains etched in Nigeria’s history as a symbol of ethical leadership and patriotic service, with his legacy continuing to inspire generations across the country.

The Vice Chancellor also expressed appreciation to the Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, for his consistent support to the university, especially in promoting peacebuilding and educational advancement.

Among the dignitaries at the event were the Emir of Bauchi and university chancellor, Alhaji Dr. Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu, the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, and the guest speaker, Rt. Brigadier General Kuka Sheka

Speaking as Chairman of the occasion, Speaker Suleiman commended the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Centre for Peace and Security Studies for initiating the memorial lecture, describing it as a noble step in preserving the values of an exemplary leader.

He described the late Prime Minister as a national figure whose dedication to peace, unity, and progress offers enduring lessons for today’s leaders.

Themed “Peace As an Inspiration for National Development: The Legacies of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa”, the lecture series affirms SAZU’s commitment to advancing peace and security studies while honouring one of Nigeria’s most respected statesmen.
