President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on 11 technical crew members of the Super Falcons, in recognition of their outstanding performance at the just concluded Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The President announced the honours on Monday at a special presidential reception in Abuja held in honour of the victorious team, following their triumph over Morocco in the tournament’s final.
In addition to the national honours, President Tinubu also awarded each of the 24 players of the Super Falcons a furnished three-bedroom bungalow at the Renewed Hope Housing Estate and a cash gift of $100,000 each.
The gesture, according to the President, was in appreciation of the team’s commitment, patriotism and for making Nigeria proud on the continental stage.
“This is a show of appreciation for your hard work and the joy you have brought to millions of Nigerians. You are champions and deserve to be treated as such,” Tinubu said.
In a similar gesture, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), through its Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, presented an additional $10,000 to each player on behalf of the 36 state governors.
Governor AbdulRazaq lauded the team for their resilience and sportsmanship, stating that their victory had united Nigerians across the country.
The Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco in a thrilling final to claim Nigeria’s 12th WAFCON title, reinforcing their dominance in African women’s football.
The event was attended by top government functionaries, members of the diplomatic corps, football stakeholders and jubilant fans.
