Police, UNFPA trains 80 officers on GBV, survivor justice in Adamawa
The Adamawa Police Command, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has trained an additional 80 Gender Desk Officers on how to handle Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases.
Speaking on Tuesday in Yola during the second phase of the step-down training, the Commissioner of Police, CP Morris Dankombo, highlighted the significance of the initiative.
He said the initiative was aimed at equipping the officers with the necessary skills to effectively manage GBV cases.
According to him, participants were drawn from 54 divisional headquarters and four area commands.
He stated that the training aligned with the inspector-general of police’s initiative to ensure justice for survivors of GBV.
Dankombo, represented by DCP John Sandare, stated that the training aimed to update participants’ knowledge on local and international best practices.
He urged participants to recognise the privilege of acquiring broader knowledge and take the training seriously.
The Command’s Spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the objective of the training was to enhance participants’ understanding of GBV and access to justice.
He highlighted the importance of handling GBV issues professionally, focusing on response, prevention and mitigation and leveraging available services like medical and legal aid, as well as community awareness initiatives.
According to him, gender desk officers will be mandated to equally train their personnel in various divisions for all police officers to be better informed about GBV.
He further called on members of the general public to reach out to the police for any emergency as they were fully equipped and capable of attending to distress calls.
Ms Bilkisu Garba, a resource person, urged participants to actively engage and disseminate the knowledge gained to achieve the training’s objectives.
She stated that the training was a collaborative effort to tackle GBV, ensuring justice for survivors and ultimately end the scourge.
“This step-down training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively handle GBV issues,” Garba said.
Insp Ijudigal Mperiju, speaking on behalf of the participants, expressed gratitude to the organisers and pledged that they would step down the training to their respective units as expected.
