Yobe has emerged as the best-performing state in Nigeria in terms of budget implementation, scoring 98.6 per cent in the 2024 Subnational Budget Performance Report by Agora Policy.

Agora Policy, a Nigerian non-profit policy think tank focused on economic development, governance and democracy, released its annual ranking on subnational budget performance with Yobe clinching the top spot, followed by Delta and Rivers States in second and third positions respectively.

Reacting to the development, Gov. Mai Mala Buni described the recognition as an inspiration to pursue higher targets in fiscal discipline and prudent management of public resources.

“Our administration has consistently developed and implemented realistic budgets aligned with prevailing economic conditions,” Buni said.

“We have also been guided by principles of transparency, due process, and accountability in managing the state’s finances. This recognition will motivate us to sustain and improve on our efforts,” he added.

Yobe’s commitment to financial transparency has continued to attract commendation from reputable national and international organisations.

The state was recently rated best in fiscal transparency and accountability under the World Bank-supported State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) programme.

Similarly, the Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI), a civil society organisation renowned for tracking public expenditure and accountability, ranked Yobe as the best-performing state in its 2023 and 2024 Subnational Audit Efficacy Index.

The report by PLSI highlighted Yobe’s consistency in surpassing 35 other states in accountability and transparency in the use of public funds.
