The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Federal Government for ensuring two uninterrupted academic sessions in universities, describing it as a historic achievement since the return to democracy in 1999.
Comrade Olushola Oladoja, National President of NANS, stated this at the 87th NANS National Inaugural Senate Sitting held at Yobe State University, Damaturu, on Saturday.
Oladoja said that proactive intervention by the Federal Government in resolving salary delays of university lecturers had helped avert potential strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
He said NANS had directly engaged the Accountant General of the Federation and the Minister of Finance to resolve issues affecting lecturers’ remuneration, which often triggered strike threats.
“This is the first time in the democratic history of Nigeria that we are enjoying two uninterrupted academic sessions.
“Many of us spent seven years for a five-year programme due to strikes, but today students can graduate on time,” he said.
The NANS president also urged students to take advantage of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which he described as a lifeline for students facing financial challenges.
He explained that the loan scheme was accessible to all students with valid matriculation numbers.
He stressed that it was interest-free and designed with a flexible repayment system.
“You are only required to repay after securing employment, with a two-year grace period.
“For those unable to find jobs immediately, additional time is provided before repayment begins,” he said.
Oladoja further noted that the administration of President Bola Tinubu had injected trillions of naira into the education sector, with emphasis on completing abandoned projects and upgrading facilities in universities.
He said the improved funding had reduced student dropout rates and created a more conducive learning environment.
“Nigerian students have never had it this good. The President has assured us that all his education policies are targeted at the future of the youth,” he added.
Earlier, Mr Adamu Nagwaza, NANS Senate President, urged students to register for their voter cards to enable them to participate in shaping the country’s democracy.
Nagwaza commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe for his consistent support for the student community, describing him as a “student and youth-friendly governor.”
Our Correspondent reports that the inaugural senate sitting brought together student leaders from across the country, including zonal coordinators, Students’ Union Government presidents and Joint Campus Committee chairmen.
