A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Propcom+, with the support of UK International Development, has commenced the training of 21 media practitioners on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) reporting and field engagement in Yola, Adamawa State.

The four-day capacity-building workshop, which began on Tuesday, is designed to enhance journalists’ knowledge and skills in climate-resilient agricultural practices, enabling them to better report on developmental and environmental issues affecting Nigeria.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Adiya Ode, Country Representative and Political Director of Propcom+, explained that the training seeks to strengthen media capacity in highlighting issues of floods, land degradation, women in farming, smallholder farmers, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

She noted that effective climate-smart agriculture reporting is crucial to addressing food security, boosting agricultural production, and creating an enabling environment through policy advocacy.

Dr. Ode added that by equipping journalists with relevant skills, the media would play a stronger role in transforming the rural economy, promoting marketing innovations, and addressing social and environmental challenges.

One of the facilitators, Mr. Adam Alqali, delivered a session on the role of the media in CSA advocacy.

He emphasised the importance of developing effective interview questions, crafting compelling reports, and engaging stakeholders to ensure climate change policies are better communicated and implemented at grassroots levels.

The participating journalists, drawn from nine states including Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are expected to serve as ambassadors in promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices across Nigeria.

The workshop combines theoretical sessions with field visits to expose participants to practical approaches in reporting climate-smart agriculture innovations.
