By Ahmed Ahmed
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sensitised Master Bakers in Bauchi State on Good Hygiene Practices (GHP).
The sensitisation programme, themed “Bakery Industry Strengthening GHP Compliance,” brought together bakers, regulators, and stakeholders to discuss best practices and standards in food safety.
Speaking at the event, on Tuesday Mr. Hamisu Yahaya, State Coordinator of NAFDAC, explained that GHP is a set of measures aimed at ensuring food safety and sanitation throughout the production process.
“As part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s food security framework and promote safe bakery production,” he said.
According to him, bakery production requires strict employee hygiene, clean facilities, effective pest control, and proper food handling to prevent contamination from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
He noted that GHP is a prerequisite linked to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), which are vital in producing safe and high-quality baked goods.
Yahaya added that the training also covered prerequisite guidelines, packaging standards, hygiene in production locations, trademark regulations, and other measures designed to enhance food security.
He said NAFDAC’s commitment to strengthening regulatory compliance in the bakery industry and supporting the federal government’s drive to ensure food security and public health across the country.
Alhaji Adamu Muhammad, Chairman of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), Bauchi chapter, commended NAFDAC for the initiative.
He described the sensitisation as timely and said it would give bakers a sense of belonging while enhancing their operations in line with national and international food safety standards.
Another participant, Alhaji Usman Mohammed proprietor of Haske Bread applauded NAFDAC for providing practical hygienic tips,
He pledged that bakers would adopt and implement the regulations in their daily production processes.
NAN reports that key stakeholders present at the sensitisation included the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the National Productivity Centre, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), among others.
