Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe on Monday launched the distribution of 50,000 bags of assorted grains to vulnerable persons across the 17 local government areas of the state.

Buni said the gesture was part of his administration’s vision to strengthen food security and resilience against natural disasters such as floods.

He commiserated with families affected by this year’s flood, noting that disasters often coincided with the lean farming period between planting and harvesting.

“Our administration is committed to providing succour at such challenging moments to support our people, mitigate the impact of the floods, restore hope and overcome these challenges with dignity,” Buni said.

Beneficiaries include 5,580 primary school teachers, 1,780 primary healthcare workers, 2,400 persons with special needs, 1,200 Tsangaya Mallams and vulnerable persons from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Others are 2,000 junior cadre civil servants, 2,000 staff of tertiary institutions, 600 staff of teaching and specialist hospitals, and 25,500 vulnerable persons across the 17 local government areas.

The governor reaffirmed government’s commitment to promoting agriculture as a tool for economic growth, food sufficiency and food security.

“These interventions will continue to receive government attention with emphasis on irrigation farming to boost productivity for food sufficiency, food security and economic prosperity of our people,” he said.

Buni commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for aligning national priorities with state-level initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda, pledging that Yobe would scale up investments in agriculture to contribute to national food security.

He also praised the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for collaborating with development and humanitarian partners to provide timely interventions for vulnerable communities.

Earlier, Dr. Muhammad Goje, Executive Secretary of SEMA, described the governor’s intervention as unprecedented and life-saving.

The World Food Programme and other development agencies also commended the state government for supporting the vulnerable during difficult times.
