SWAN@60: Cleric urges journalists to inspire hope through reports
By Ahmed Ahmed
The Minister in Charge of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Bauchi Mission Parish, Rev. David Agbong, has called on journalists across the country to serve as agents of hope and peace through their reportage.
Delivering his Sunday sermon during a thanksgiving service to mark the 60th anniversary of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Agbong urged media practitioners to focus on stories that inspire optimism and unity among Nigerians.
He reminded journalists of their crucial role as “mouthpieces of the people,” emphasising that their reports should calm tensions rather than escalate them.
“As sports writers, you have the power to use sports as a tool to unite our diverse society.
“Even in challenging times, your words can give Nigerians hope that the country will get better.” he said
The Cleric drew lessons from the Book of Numbers, the cleric likened journalists to the twelve spies sent by Moses to Canaan, noting that only two returned with truthful and encouraging reports.
He urged reporters to emulate those two by upholding truth and integrity in their work.
Agbong also offered prayers for God’s protection over all sports journalists, particularly those traveling to commemorate the SWAN at 60 celebrations.
He remembered colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty and prayed for continued divine guidance for those still serving.
The SWAN Chairman, Bala Bawaji, said the thanksgiving services were being held simultaneously across Nigeria to seek God’s blessings for the anniversary.
He expressed gratitude to the Presbyterian Church for its support and partnership in marking the milestone celebration.
