SAVWIN seeks inclusion of women with disabilities in climate planning
By Ahmed Isah
Sound Abilities for Vulnerable Women Initiative Nigeria (SAVWIN) has called on government to give priority to women and girls with disabilities in climate change planning in Borno.
The Executive Director of the organisation, Miyausa Wayuta, made the call at a press briefing in Maiduguri while outlining the challenges confronting the vulnerable group.
She stated that the organisation convened the briefing to emphasise the need for inclusive climate initiatives that respond to the specific difficulties faced by women and girls with disabilities in the state.
She said climate pressures continued to heighten risks for the group, making it necessary for government to integrate disability considerations into climate planning, disaster risk reduction and adaptation programmes.
Wayuta said the ongoing project, supported by the Disability Rights Fund, was designed to promote disability-inclusive climate policies and programmes across Borno.
She explained that SAVWIN was ready to collaborate with government agencies, civil society organisations and communities to ensure that women and girls with disabilities were not excluded from climate interventions.
She said one of the project’s core objectives was to increase the knowledge of 150 women with disabilities on climate policies and enhance their advocacy skills for climate action.
She added that the project also sought to advocate the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in climate policies in Borno, while raising public awareness on the need for disability-inclusive climate measures.
