The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended officers alleged to be involved in unprofessional conduct with inmates at a custodial centre in Yobe State.
The Service said the suspension takes immediate effect and would remain in force pending the conclusion of a full-scale investigation.
It stated that queries and Charge Sheets had also been issued to other personnel to determine their level of involvement in the incident.
The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) Chairman and Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension after receiving the preliminary investigation report.
He reiterated that allegations of misconduct within any agency under the Board would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Service said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of misconduct, negligence, rights violations, or inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates.
It added that any officer found culpable would face disciplinary measures and possible legal sanctions in line with extant regulations.
Controller-General of the Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, MFR, mni, assured the public of the NCoS’ commitment to professionalism, integrity and adherence to the rule of law.
He said all correctional facilities nationwide would continue to operate in line with established laws, ethical standards and operational procedures.
