The North East Stakeholders Forum for Sustainable Development (NESFSD) has commended the Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, for what it described as impactful and people-centred interventions across host communities in Gombe and Taraba States.

The commendation was made on Wednesday in Bauchi during a press briefing at Whitehill Hotel by the National Chairman of the Forum, Alhaji Murtala Sule Jalingo, alongside the Secretary-General, Comrade Danladi Bawa Gombe.

Jalingo praised N-HYPPADEC’s tailored approach to development, noting that the commission’s intensified efforts had brought relief, hope, and improved livelihoods to power-producing communities.

He particularly highlighted the Managing Director’s recent visit to newly admitted member states in the region, following their inclusion by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2023, describing it as a demonstration of inclusive leadership.

According to him, the commission has made significant strides in mitigating ecological challenges associated with hydroelectric power operations while promoting sustainable development.

In Gombe State, he listed interventions to include the supply of 1,100 life jackets, provision of an operational flying boat to Kupto Community, installation of solar streetlights, construction of solar-powered boreholes, desilting of drainages, classroom construction, and payment of NECO examination fees for indigent students.

The NESFSD chairman lauded N-HYPPADEC for prioritising projects that directly affect the daily lives of rural dwellers, describing the commission as “the headquarters of rural development in Nigeria.”

He also expressed satisfaction with the Managing Director’s promise to deliver a 33-seater boat and additional safety facilities to riverine communities.

Comrade Danladi Bawa Gombe, in his remarks, commended the commission’s efforts in addressing environmental and socio-economic challenges in Taraba State.

He said since 2024, N-HYPPADEC had established a state office in Jalingo, installed 34 solar-powered streetlights, constructed 15 solar-powered boreholes, distributed 32 power tiller machines to farming cooperatives, provided flying boats for riverine transport, desilted over 40,000 metres of drainages, supplied transformers, and supported students through NECO fee payments.

The Forum assured the Managing Director of continued support from the people of Gombe and Taraba States and appealed for the inclusion of all remaining local government areas in future interventions.
