The Bauchi State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajara Yakubu Wanka, has paid a condolence visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, over the death of two journalists who lost their lives after a ghastly road accident while on official assignment.

The accident, which occurred in February, involved 14 journalists from various media organisations who were covering the commissioning of projects by the North East Development Commission in Bauchi State.

During the visit to the NUJ Secretariat, Wanka expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr. Kani Ben of Channels Television and Mr. Kabiru Ahmed Ilelah of Bauchi State Television, who died after sustaining injuries from the crash.

“It is with profound sorrow, but total submission to the will of Allah, that we received the tragic news of the passing of two dedicated media professionals,” she said.

According to her, the late journalists were hardworking and committed professionals who played significant roles in informing the public through their work as cameramen.

Wanka described their death as a painful loss not only to their families but also leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, as well as the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased, praying to Almighty Allah to grant them the strength to bear the irreparable loss.

Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ Bauchi State Council, Malam Umar Said, appreciated the commissioner for her compassion, noting that she had earlier visited the injured journalists in the hospital before coming to formally condole with the union.

He described the gesture as commendable and pledged the union’s continued partnership with the ministry.
