The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, has lauded Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for approving the upgrading of the NUJ State Secretariat, describing the move as a strong indication of the administration’s commitment to strengthening the media and promoting professional journalism in the state.

The commendation was delivered during the NUJ December 2025 Congress, which also marked the final congress of the year, held on Thursday at the State Council Secretariat in Bauchi.

The appreciation was expressed by the State Chairman, Comrade Umar Sa’idu, through his Vice, Comrade Ahmad Muhammad Kaigama, while presiding over the well-attended meeting.

According to the Chairman, the upgrade of the Secretariat will significantly improve administrative efficiency and provide a more enabling and conducive environment for journalists to effectively discharge their professional duties.

He noted that the NUJ Secretariat serves as the nerve centre of journalistic activities in Bauchi State and, as such, requires continuous attention and investment to meet the evolving demands of the profession.

Comrade Sa’idu reaffirmed the commitment of the State Council to pursuing programmes and policies that promote professionalism, unity, ethical journalism, and capacity building among members.

He stressed that sustained collaboration among the various chapels remains vital to strengthening the collective voice of journalists and advancing the objectives of the Union across the state.

The Chairman also called on all chapels to continue supporting the State Council, emphasizing that only through collective effort can the Union effectively implement policies that positively impact journalism practice, training opportunities, and the welfare of members.

In a goodwill message, the North-East Zonal Secretary of NUJ, Comrade Abubakar Musa Waziri, underscored the need for improved welfare for working journalists.

He noted that adequate welfare packages are critical to enabling journalists to perform their duties independently, professionally, and without undue pressure.

He urged the State Council to sustain engagement with relevant authorities and stakeholders on issues affecting journalists’ well-being.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Bauchi Radio Corporation, Umar Muhammad Shira, alongside former NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Malam Goje, and veteran journalist Nasiru Abdullahi Kobi, encouraged journalists across all chapels to consistently attend congress meetings, particularly when critical issues concerning the Union and the profession are under discussion.

The senior journalists commended the NUJ Bauchi leadership for its achievements in stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and policy direction, describing the current leadership as proactive and focused.

They advised younger journalists to fully utilize training opportunities offered by the Union, stressing that professionalism, discipline, unity, and ethical conduct are essential to the growth and credibility of journalism in Bauchi State.

The congress also featured the presentation of minutes of the previous meeting, the Secretariat’s report, and the financial report, with representatives from various chapels in attendance at the final congress of 2025.
