SCI Demands Better Education for Girls in Yobe

Save the Children International (SCI) has called for improved education for girls in Yobe, highlighting culture as a factor depriving them of reaching their full potential.

Independent Newspaper Reporters reports that United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 66/170 declaring Oct 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child on Dec 19, 2011 to address the challenges girls face across the world.

Mr AbdulWasi’u Ogunbeni, SCI’s Advocacy and Mobilisation Officer made call at at the commemoration of the International Day for the Girl Child 2024 on Friday in Damaturu.

“As you know the girl child mostly face a lot of cultural barriers that deprive them of actual living their full potentials in life.

“So this day has been designated to raise awareness, create sensitisation, raise government consciousness to prioritise girl child education in the state,” he said.

He emphasised that deprivation of girls’ education leads to early marriage, affecting health, education, and well-being.

Ogunbeni added that SCI had invited career women to guide girls on achieving their careers, inspiring them to emulate successful women.

He acknowledged the state government’s efforts in establishing girls’ senior secondary schools in various local government areas in the state.

Hajiya Fatsima Hassan, the Director of Women Affairs, Yobe commended the government’s recent establishment of girls’ senior secondary schools.

She highlighted that the intervention had enabled more girls to continue their education beyond junior secondary school.

Hassan urged parents and guardians to take advantage of these opportunities and send their daughters to school to help them realize their full potential.
