The Federal Commissioner for Borno/Yobe State, Barr. Isa Audu Buratai, has said the Nigeria Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) study was launched in Yobe State to reduce maternal and child mortality.
Buratai disclosed this during a press conference on Thursday in Damaturu.
He said the study, a collaborative effort between the National Population Commission (NPC) and the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), would provide insights into the causes of under-five and maternal deaths.
“This round of VASA study builds on previous efforts from 2014 and 2019, which provided valuable information that helped shape health policies and interventions aimed at reducing preventable deaths,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the study would collect essential data on both maternal and child mortality, focusing on the social and health-related factors that contribute to these tragic losses.
He urged the public to cooperate with the data collectors and provide accurate information to ensure the success of the study.
“Your cooperation is crucial in addressing the issues of maternal and child health and securing a healthier future for our communities and our country,” he said.
The VASA study will be conducted in selected communities throughout the state between November 4 and December 15, 2024.
