The Yobe State Arabic and Islamic Education Board (AISEB) on Tuesday flagged off the distribution of 99 hygiene kits to Almajiri pupils and awarded 300 Islamiyya students for outstanding Qur’anic memorization, while dedicating the events to the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

The ceremony, held in Damaturu, also marked the launch of the Local Government Qur’anic Recitation Competition, a two-week event integrated into the state’s Islamic education calendar.

Dr. Umar Abubakar, Executive Secretary of AISEB, announced that the competition’s spiritual rewards would be dedicated to the late former president, who passed away recently.

“We seize this opportunity to offer special prayers, seeking Almighty Allah’s forgiveness and mercy upon the late President Buhari,” he said.

The event, organized in collaboration with Plan International, included the distribution of hygiene kits containing antiseptic soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and Vaseline to 99 Almajiri pupils. Additionally, 300 Islamiyya students were rewarded for excellence in Qur’anic memorization.

In his remarks, Governor Mai Mala Buni emphasized the significance of Qur’anic education in shaping moral and intellectual development in the state.

“This initiative is to advance the cause of Qur’anic education in Yobe and Nigeria at large. Qur’anic education plays a vital role in every aspect of our lives,” he stated.

Representing Plan International, Project Officer Halima Jibril explained that the hygiene kits were provided to improve the welfare of Almajiri children, who often face poor hygiene conditions.

“Plan International has been supporting AISEB since 2019, establishing community schools and providing teaching materials. Recognizing the hygiene challenges among Almajiri pupils, we provided these kits to promote their well-being,” she said.

The Qur’anic competition, which begins at the local government level, aims to foster deeper engagement with Islamic teachings among youths in Yobe State.
