The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has constructed and handed over a 450-capacity multipurpose hall to Government Science Secondary School (GSS), Damaturu.

Prof. Muhammed Alkali, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NEDC, made this known on Saturday at the commissioning of the project during the GSS Damaturu Old Students Association (DOSA) National Congress in Damaturu.

The DOSA meeting, with the theme “Unity and Perseverance in the Face of Challenges”, witnessed the official unveiling of the hall, which was named after the pioneer principal of the school, late Mr. Wutama Bulama Samba.

Alkali said the facility was built to serve multiple purposes, including academic, social, and commercial activities, adding that it could also provide revenue for the school and alumni body.

He urged the DOSA members and the school management to use the facility judiciously, stressing that education remained the bedrock of meaningful development in the region.

Alhaji Garba Iliya, National President of DOSA, expressed satisfaction over the project and described it as a milestone in the association’s efforts to support its alma mater.

He said the congress served as a platform to promote unity, mentorship, professional networking and youth empowerment, while also charting a sustainable path for the school’s growth.

“This is not just a reunion of classmates, but an opportunity to consolidate our gains, strengthen our bonds and deliberate on strategies to sustain the relevance of DOSA,” he said.

Hajiya Ladi Gali, Principal of the school, commended the alumni and NEDC for their contribution, noting that the facility, alongside other interventions such as solar installations and library support, had left an indelible mark on the institution.

She said the hall would serve generations of students and enhance both academic and extracurricular activities in the school.

The event was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, alumni members and other dignitaries.
