NEDC Boosts Basic Education in Yobe with Solar Power, Water Projects
By Ahmed Isah
The North East Development Commission has expanded support for basic education in Yobe through solar-powered electricity, water supply, teacher training and learning materials across public schools.
The intervention covers Mega and Model Schools established by the Yobe Government in Damaturu, Potiskum, Gashua, Geidam, Buni Yadi and Nguru, among other locations.
A statement made available to our correspondent in Damaturu said the commission installed solar streetlights and solar-powered boreholes to improve learning conditions and sanitation.
The Mega Schools include Damaturu, Kachalla Bauya Potiskum, Kara Potiskum, Gashua, Geidam, Buni Yadi and Nguru, while seven Model Schools also benefited.

Other beneficiary schools include Central Primary School Buni Yadi, Ari Kime Primary School Potiskum, Federal Science and Technical College Gashua and Government Girls Unity College Damaturu.
The statement said the projects were implemented in collaboration with the Yobe State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education through the State Universal Basic Education Board.
It added that beneficiary schools were selected based on high pupil and student enrolment across the state.
According to the commission, the solar streetlights enhanced security and aesthetics, while constant water supply improved hygiene and sanitation, particularly for female students.
A teacher at Mega School Geidam said the intervention had increased attendance and improved learning outcomes.

“Water is now available in classrooms and toilets, which has brought relief to students and teachers and improved school attendance,” the teacher said.
The commission also organised a teacher training programme on modern teaching methods in 2025, with about 1,200 teachers participating.
One of the beneficiaries said the training had improved classroom delivery and student engagement.
In addition, NEDC distributed marker boards, teaching accessories, school bags and exercise books to strengthen teaching and learning.
The commission also completed and handed over the NEDC Mega School at Ari Kime, Potiskum, as part of post-conflict education recovery efforts.

The statement described the intervention as a coordinated effort to support the Yobe Government’s education reform agenda through sustainable infrastructure and capacity building.
It reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to partnering state governments to address education challenges across the North East.
