Governor Mai Mala Buni has flagged off reconstruction of the Damaturu–Gujba–Buni-Yadi–Magza road, describing it as vital to security, farming and cross-border trade.

Buni, speaking in Damaturu on Wednesday, said the federal highway was constructed over five decades ago and links Yobe to southern Borno and parts of the South-East.

He said the road facilitates movement of people, goods and services, and supports social, economic and agricultural activities in benefiting communities.

According to him, years of heavy usage and increased traffic pressure damaged several portions, making reconstruction imperative.

The governor recalled that the administration of former Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam selected the stretch from Damaturu to Magza, bordering Borno, as a strategic corridor.

He noted that the road remains a major link between southern Borno and communities in Yobe, especially in the post-insurgency period.

Buni said the state government approached the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) for intervention on the project.

“I am happy to state that our discussions with the commission have been fruitful, and the outcome is what we are witnessing today,” he said.

The governor commended the commission for approving the request and prioritising the project.

He described infrastructure as a critical component in promoting security, easing movement of troops, equipment and reinforcements when necessary.

Buni added that improved road networks had enhanced access to farmlands and markets, strengthened resilience and supported sustainable livelihoods.

He appreciated the Federal Government for supporting critical interventions in the state and urged benefiting communities to cooperate with contractors.

The governor also charged contractors to execute the project in line with contractual agreements to ensure durability and quality delivery.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of the North-East Development Commission, Mr Mohammed Alkali, assured that the commission would complete the road without interruption.

Alkali acknowledged the governor’s sustained engagement with the commission, saying consistent follow-up translated intention into action.

He said the commission had delivered several projects in Yobe, including installation of more than 6,000 solar street lights across communities.

According to him, three mega schools constructed in the state have been completed and commissioned.

Alkali added that over 150 functional boreholes had been provided, while the commission’s state office in Yobe was the first to be completed and operational in the North-East.

He assured residents that the commission would sustain collaboration with the state government to accelerate recovery and development in the region.
