30,000 Families Receive Ramadan Food Baskets in Yobe State
Yobe Gov, Mai Mala Buni has flagged off the distribution of Ramadan food baskets to 30,000 vulnerable households across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
Speaking at the official ceremony in Damaturu on Tuesday, Buni highlighted the state government’s commitment to easing the burden of food insecurity during the holy month of Ramadan.
He announced that the government is also expending N297 million to provide food at Ramadan feeding centres, which have been increased from 85 to 102 this year, with additional locations situated mostly in health institutions.
“It is with immense gratitude to Almighty Allah (SWT) and a sense of fulfillment that we assemble here today to flag off the distribution of the Ramadan food baskets to 30,000 vulnerable households across the 17 LGAs of our dear state.
“This initiative is a testament to the policy of compassion and commitment to the well-being of our people, particularly during this holy month of Ramadan.”
He explained that the Food Basket programme would provide food items, including rice and condiments, to vulnerable households, internally displaced persons (IDPs), teachers and junior staff of educational boards, resident doctors, flood victims, farmers affected by poor harvests, and other disadvantaged persons.
“The government is determined to ease the burden of food insecurity and provide essential support to families in over 30,000 households struggling to meet their daily nutritional needs,” he said.
Governor Buni also reiterated the state government’s responsiveness to the plight of its people, citing the provision of emergency relief and financial support following the 2024 floods.
He mentioned ongoing projects like the Erosion Flood and Water Harvesting project in Damaturu and Buni Yadi towns, aimed at mitigating flood risks and promoting irrigation.
Governor Buni called on individuals to complement government efforts by supporting their neighbours, emphasising the values of kindness, generosity, and solidarity.
He also warned those responsible for the distribution to ensure transparency and efficiency in reaching the intended beneficiaries.
Hajiya Mairo Amshi, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, described the initiative as a collective commitment to ensuring no family goes hungry during Ramadan.
“The distribution we are flagging off today is not just about providing food, it is about restoring dignity, strengthening community resilience, and ensuring that families can observe Ramadan with peace of mind,” she said.
