ACReSAL Sensitize 5 Communities on Bushfire Prevention in Yobe

Yobe State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Tuesday rounded off its first phase of mass sensitization awareness campaign on the prevention of bushfires in 5 implementing communities of the state.

Ibrahim Baba Saleh, the Communication Officer made this in a statement on Wednesday in Damaturu.

He said the initiative was in response to the Federal Project Management Unit’s (FPMU) directives aimed at safeguarding ACReSAL’s investments from devastating consequences of unattended fires.

The campaign according to him wa hes crucial in raising awareness among local community members on the dangers of bush fires and the importance of taking preventive measures.

Speaking during the sensitization exercise, ACReSAL State Project Coordinator, Shehu Alhaji Mohammed highlighted that huge resources have expended on specific ACReSAL afforestation activities which include woodlots, shelter belts, sand dunes stabilization, community nurseries and orchard in the implementing communities.

Represented by the Communication Officer, Ibrahim Baba Saleh, the PC stated that protecting such investment became necessary in order to achieve a sustainable environment for rural communities.

He outlined some of the causes of fire outbreaks in the local environment to include careless burning of debris and trash either at home or in the farm, throwing of lighted cigarettes, unattended lighted firewood, faulty electric connection and so on.

In their separate response, the community leaders and members have assured ACReSAL team of taking the campaign to their various households.

The first phase of the sensitization covered Tulo-Tulo, Kaska, Maimalari, Balanguwa and Afunori communities respectively.
