500 Yobe Mothers Champion Breastfeeding for Better Babies
The Yobe Government has set a target of contributing 500 lactating mothers to a national campaign aimed at breaking the world record for the largest simultaneous breastfeeding event.
The state’s Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Lawan Gana, made this disclosure during the flag-off ceremony for the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week in Damaturu on Thursday.
The commissioner emphasized the crucial role of breastfeeding in child health and development, stressing the state’s commitment to supporting mothers in this vital practice.
He noted that Yobe already provides free drugs and healthcare services to pregnant women and children under five as part of its broader maternal and child health initiatives.
Gana explained that the state government is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and other partners to achieve the breastfeeding record.
He further emphasized that the program aims to raise awareness about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding while addressing harmful practices.
“This record attempt is more than just a number; it’s a powerful platform to promote exclusive breastfeeding, challenge harmful norms, and combat social stigma,” the commissioner stated.
Dr. Kundi Machina, the Executive Secretary of the Yobe Primary Healthcare Board, highlighted the numerous benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and infants.
He urged healthcare providers, communities, and parents to support mothers in exclusively breastfeeding their children for the first six months of life.
The World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually from August 1 to 7 to promote breastfeeding and improve infant health globally.
This year’s theme, “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All,” underscores the need for comprehensive support for breastfeeding mothers.
Well done
