Stakeholders in Bauchi State have called for increased support for survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and emphasized the need to amplify their voices.

The appeal was made during a roundtable discussion on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law Sensitization and Implementation Strengthening, organized by Leadtots in collaboration with Plan International and supported by Global Affairs Canada.

Amina Garba, a legal expert, stressed the importance of empowering survivors to make decisions regarding their own lives.

“As we strive to create a safer and more just society, I urge the public to support survivors of SGBV. It is crucial that we amplify their voices, trust them, and allow them to take charge of their own healing and recovery,” she said.

Garba highlighted the need for strict monitoring of VAPP Law enforcement, particularly at the grassroots level. She also advocated for increased safe shelters and trauma counseling centers for survivors.

“We need to build strong capacity for prosecutors, judicial officers, magistrates, high court judges, and even Sharia court judges. Fast-tracking the trial of sexual offenses is vital, as such cases are time-sensitive,” she added.

In his remarks, Nicholas Oshojah, Executive Director of Leadtots, identified low awareness of the VAPP Act as a significant barrier to its effectiveness.

He emphasized the need for collective action, strategic advocacy, and robust institutional responses to combat gender-based violence.

“Our objective is not only to sensitize stakeholders on the VAPP Act but also to strengthen its implementation by identifying key barriers and proposing actionable solutions.

“The fight against gender-based violence, domestic abuse, and all forms of harm requires more than just laws,it demands a unified approach to ensure no survivor is left behind.”Oshojah stated.
