Dr Lawan Cheri, Dean, School of Management Sciences, Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, has called for improved intelligence sharing and deployment of advanced technology to enhance Nigeria’s security architecture.

Cheri made the call on Wednesday in Damaturu while commenting on President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast to mark the 2025 Democracy Day.

He noted that though relative peace was being experienced in some areas previously affected by insecurity, there was still room for improvement in the operations of security agencies.

“There is a need to improve intelligence sharing among the security establishments. Strengthening civil-military relations will help civilians build confidence in the military and other security outfits to volunteer information,” he said.

The dean also advocated the use of digital surveillance systems such as night-vision CCTV cameras in urban areas and drones for monitoring movements in rural communities.

“It remains a mystery how convoys of insurgents or bandits invade rural communities undetected and vanish into the bush,” he said.

According to him, Nigeria’s security architecture must move with the times by leveraging technology to enhance surveillance and response.

“Our security personnel are knowledgeable, but there is need for greater commitment in embracing modern tools for effective operations,” he added.

Cheri commended the security agencies for their ongoing efforts, noting that without some level of stability, citizens would not be able to engage in normal activities.

“If they were not doing anything, people like me and you would not be peacefully holding discussions today,” he said.

Our correspondent reports that President Tinubu, in his Democracy Day speech, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to national security and promised continued support to security personnel across the county.
