The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed food and non-food items to 2,261 households affected by floods in Potiskum, Nangere and Jakusko Local Government Areas of Yobe State.

The intervention covered 21 communities in Potiskum, two in Nangere — Garin Kolo and Ajim — and six in Jakusko, including Jakusko, Dachia, Yim, Saminaka, Garin Maji and Amshi.

Items shared included rice, vegetable oil, spaghetti, mats, blankets and clothing for men, women and children.

NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Goni Alkali, represented by the Yobe State Coordinator, Prof. Ibrahim Abba, said the distribution was aimed at easing the living conditions of households adversely affected by the 2024 floods.

He explained that the support came following a request by the Yobe Government to the Commission for assistance.

“The recent flooding has displaced many families across Yobe State. Today, we are here with the local government authorities and the State Emergency Management Agency to distribute food and non-food items to 2,261 households,” Abba said.

Executive Secretary of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Mohammed Goje, noted that Governor Mai Mala Buni had directed the agency to respond swiftly to disaster situations.

Chairman of Potiskum Local Government, Salisu Muktari, thanked the NEDC and Yobe Government for the intervention and urged beneficiaries to make good use of the support.

Beneficiaries, including Balki Ahmed from Jigawa community in Potiskum and Abdullahi Ahmed from Garin Kolo in Nangere, expressed gratitude for the assistance and pledged to utilize the items for their intended purpose.
