The Borno State Government is set to collaborate with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to restore train services between Maiduguri and its environs, a move aimed at revitalizing economic activities and improving the state’s transportation system.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by Mrs. Sefrem Felix-Feson, District Public Relations Officer (DPRO), North Eastern District (NED), Bauchi, and made available to newsmen on Monday.
According to the statement, the Railway District Manager (RDM), Mr. Marcellinus Zirra, and his team continued their familiarization tour to the Maiduguri Railway Depot, one of the key commercial stations within the district.
During the visit, Zirra inspected the station’s facilities and interacted with staff members. reaffirming that the Borno State Government plans to invest heavily in the rail sector to strengthen economic linkages, enhance logistics, and promote regional development.
He explained that the visit was part of ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency and service delivery across the North Eastern District. Zirra also underscored the importance of punctuality, discipline, and effective coordination among railway personnel to achieve optimal performance.
“The North Eastern District is committed to restoring the railway’s former glory in line with the Managing Director’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the Nigerian Railway system,” Zirra stated.
He noted that the collaboration with the Borno State Government would pave the way for the revival of the Maiduguri rail line, which once served as a major transportation corridor connecting the Northeast to other parts of the country.
The planned resumption of train operations, Zirra said, is expected to create employment opportunities, boost trade, and ease the movement of goods and passengers across the region, thereby contributing to the socio-economic growth of Borno State and Nigeria at large.
