NOA Calls on NURTW to Adjust Transport Fares Following PMS Price Reduction
By Ahmed Isah
National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Yobe to review fares following the fall of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) prices.
Agency state acting Director, Hajiya Maryam Shettima, made the call during a courtesy visit to the NURTW branch on Wednesday in Damaturu.
“There is the urgent need for the union to review transportation fares in accordance with the present pump price of (PMS),’’ she said.
Shettima , however, observed that the union’s daily interface with wider spectrum of the citizens made it imperative to promote safety and responsible conduct within the transport sector.
She called on the union to be security-conscious by addressing vehicle overloading and over speeding to protect passengers’ lives and property.
Responding, the NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Muhammed Maina, thanked the agency for its sustained support and partnership with the union.
He further said that the union had already engaged relevant authorities to stabilise prices with the limited reductions in consideration of the persistent high costs of spare parts and accessories.
Maina described the agency’s reorientation Programme as essential and pledged to continued collaborating with the NOA and other security agencies to ensure smooth operations in the state .
He appealed to the government to provide Compressed Natural Gas buses it promised after subsidy removal.
“We are calling on the government to rehabilitate major federal highways to improve efficiency and safety.”
