The management of Albarka Radio 97.5 FM, Bauchi, has strongly condemned what it described as a brutal and unprovoked assault on one of its reporters by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bununu in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area during the Sallah celebration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Bauchi, and signed by its General Manager, Dauda Mohammed Ciroma, the station expressed outrage over the incident.describing it as inhumane, unjustifiable, and a direct attack on press freedom and democratic values.
Albarka Radio stated that the alleged high-handed conduct of the DPO and his officers represents a gross abuse of power and a violation of the constitutional rights of journalists to carry out their lawful duties without intimidation or harassment.
The management stressed that such actions have no place in a democratic society.
The station aligned itself with the position of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), expressing confidence in the union’s leadership to ensure justice is served.
It also appreciated the support received from individuals, civil society groups, and media organizations.
While acknowledging the condemnation of the incident by the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, Albarka Radio called for the immediate suspension of the DPO to ensure an impartial investigation.
It warned that failure to act decisively could undermine public trust, insisting that those responsible must face appropriate sanctions to deter future misconduct.
