The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Borno State Council, have pledged to strengthen collaboration toward effective dissemination of electoral information ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Borno, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, made the commitment when he visited the NUJ Borno Council on Wednesday in Maiduguri.
Abdullahi called for stronger partnership between INEC and journalists to ensure that accurate information on the electoral process was effectively disseminated from the beginning to the end of the exercise.
He said journalists had a critical responsibility in educating the public on electoral procedures, stressing the need for them to obtain information from authoritative sources before reporting.
The REC urged journalists not to rely solely on social media for electoral information, but to verify information through INEC and other credible sources.
He assured journalists that his office remained open to enquiries, clarifications and engagements on issues relating to the electoral process.
Abdullahi said effective communication between INEC and the media would help reduce misinformation and enhance public understanding of the electoral process.
The Commission has also identified the media as a key stakeholder in the success of the 2027 elections, noting that journalists require adequate knowledge of electoral processes and relevant laws to report objectively.
Responding, the NUJ Borno Chairman, Comrade Abdulkareem Haruna, pledged the council’s effective collaboration and partnership with INEC to ensure comprehensive coverage of electoral activities.
Haruna said the NUJ would support efforts aimed at promoting credible elections through responsible and professional journalism.
He commended the REC for visiting the council and engaging journalists, describing the initiative as an important step toward building stronger relations between INEC and the media ahead of the elections.
