The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned 36 family accommodation units for soldiers at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of efforts to improve troops’ welfare.
The facility was commissioned on Thursday by the Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, Major General I.A. Ajose, on behalf of the Army Chief.
The commissioning formed part of activities marking Lieutenant General Shaibu’s first anniversary in office as Chief of Army Staff.
The accommodation project consists of three blocks containing 12 two-bedroom flats each, providing a total of 36 housing units for soldiers of the Corporals and Below cadre.
The project was awarded in February 2025 by the Office of the Chief of Army Staff, while construction work commenced in early March of the same year.
The quarters have been equipped with modern facilities, including plaster of Paris (POP) ceilings, electrical fittings and kitchen cabinets, to improve the living conditions of personnel and their families.
In his welcome address, the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division, described the project as an important step towards improving the welfare and working conditions of troops serving in the theatre.
He said providing decent accommodation for soldiers would contribute to their operational effectiveness, readiness and morale as they continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities of protecting lives and property.
A beneficiary, who spoke on behalf of the soldiers, expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff for the intervention, saying the new accommodation would enhance their comfort and overall welfare.
“We sincerely appreciate your unwavering commitment to troops’ welfare and thank you for this remarkable gesture,” the beneficiary said.
The Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, was represented at the ceremony by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Deputy Theatre Commander, the Acting General Officer Commanding of 7 Division, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), senior military officers and other invited guests.
