The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)-funded STEPSERN project, implemented by Care Nigeria, has launched its Woman Lead In Emergency (WLIE) activities in Potiskum, Yobe State.

The initiative aims to empower women, promote gender equality, and enhance their participation in decision-making processes within the community.

Speaking during the state-level presentation in Potiskum, Mrs. Mary Amos, a project representative, highlighted the significance of the WLIE activities.

She emphasized the need to provide opportunities for women’s economic empowerment, inclusion, and equality in diverse participation within the community and state levels.

She added that the project has engaged over 400 women who are actively involved in the program in Potiskum.

“These women have developed action plans and have commenced implementation of their activities. The WLIE approach is self-driven, empowering women to come together and make decisions that affect their lives,” she explained.

She also said the project employs various strategies, such as social analysis and action, and engages men and boys to address Gender-Based Violence (GBV), harmful gender norms, and barriers that hinder women’s progress.

Mrs. Amos expressed gratitude to the Yobe State government and other partners for their cooperation in supporting the project.

She called for continued support to ensure the sustainability of the initiative and the provision of quality services to women and girls in the community.

Abacha Abubakar, the Area Manager for Yobe State, mentioned some of the key partners involved in the project, including ministries of the Yobe State government, security agencies, UN bodies, civil society organizations, and NAPTIP.
