Yobe Govt Empowers Persons with Disabilities
The Yobe State Government has celebrated the 2024 International Disability Day, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of persons with special needs.
The event which took place on Saturday in Damaturu witnessed the distribution of 350 tricycle wheelchairs and dignity kits to beneficiaries.
Aji Yerima Bularafa, Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Empowerment and Employment Generation, said the government, under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, is dedicated to empowering all citizens, especially those with disabilities.
“Governor Buni approved the purchase of these wheelchair tricycles to enhance the mobility and resilience of persons with special needs,” Bularafa said, represented by Alhaji Sabo, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics.
Dr Usman Bura Gabai, Chairman of the Yobe State Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAWPD), commended the government and development partners for their support.
However, he urged Governor Buni to expedite the signing of the bill on persons with disabilities, which was recently passed by the state House of Assembly.
“This bill will promote inclusivity and address many challenges faced by persons with special needs,” Gabai said.
Representatives from various development partners, including UN-OCHA, UNFPA, Care International, and OPDs, emphasized the importance of inclusion and continued support for persons with disabilities.
The event culminated in the presentation of awards to Governor Buni and other individuals for their contributions to the cause of persons with special needs.
