The UN Women, in partnership with the Small Scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON), has distributed biogas stoves to 250 women across Bauchi and Dass Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Bauchi State.

Hajiya Marka Abass, National Public Relations Officer of SWOFON,stated this in an interview with newsmen Tuesday in Bauchi.

She said the initiative aligns with UN Women’s commitment to providing clean, affordable, and sustainable cooking alternatives that reduce dependence on firewood, enhance health, and empower women economically.

“The distribution includes installation in 125 households in Bauchi LGA and another 125 in Dass LGA.

“The entire process was completed within five to six days, and all beneficiaries have already been trained on the importance, usage, and maintenance of biogas technology,” Abass explained.

She highlighted that the household biogas project is a dual-purpose intervention addressing both climate change mitigation and gender equality.

According to her, UN Women has also facilitated capacity-building programs for women and local artisans, equipping them with skills to install and maintain biogas digesters.

“This not only ensures sustainability but also opens up new income-generating opportunities within these communities,” she said.

Abass noted the multiple benefits of the project, including improved respiratory health due to reduced exposure to smoke from traditional cooking, time savings from less firewood collection, and cost savings for families.

“The bio-slurry byproduct can also be used for gardening, providing further economic value,” she added.

She urged beneficiaries to use the biogas stoves responsibly and maintain them properly, warning that the stoves are not for resale but meant to uplift their standard of living.
