Yobe LG Poll: Sensitive Materials Dispatched to 17 LGAs — YobeSIEC

The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YobeSIEC) says it has dispatched sensitive and other essential election materials to all the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state ahead of Saturday’s local government elections.

The Executive Chairman of the commission, Dr Ibrahim Muhammad Yabani, disclosed this while briefing journalists on Friday in Damaturu.

Yabani said the materials were sorted and dispatched to the various LGAs in accordance with the commission’s guidelines and in consultation with relevant stakeholders and security agencies.

He said some of the materials were dispatched on Friday morning for security reasons, adding that no complaint had been received from any of the 17 LGAs regarding the distribution.

The chairman said the commission had also been engaging political parties, stakeholders and security agencies as part of preparations for the elections.

According to him, the commission on Friday briefed the State Security Council on its level of preparedness and security arrangements for the poll.

Yabani said the commission, in collaboration with security agencies, had identified areas considered vulnerable to security challenges and made arrangements to ensure that eligible voters in such areas were able to participate in the election.

He explained that the Electoral Law allowed the commission to cluster polling units in areas considered security flashpoints and relocate them to safer locations.

“This is not the first time we are doing this. We have a history of doing it in previous elections conducted in the state,” he said.

Yabani assured the public that the commission was ready for the election, scheduled for Saturday, and urged stakeholders to support a peaceful conduct of the exercise.

He said the commission would continue to work with security agencies to ensure adequate security at polling locations and other designated areas.

The chairman said he would monitor the exercise in Gujba, where the Deputy Governor of the state is expected to cast his vote.

The governor, he explained, would not be available to cast his vote in Buni because he was away on a national assignment.

Yabani urged voters and other stakeholders to adhere to the guidelines and maintain peace throughout the electoral process.
