The Special Adviser to Borno Governor Babagana Zulum on Media and Communications, Mr Dauda Iliya,
has dismissed allegations by the Presidential Campaign Council of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that Gov. Zulum threatened opposition politicians with arrest.

Iliya described the ADC statement as politically motivated and based on a misinterpretation of the governor’s recent media engagement with journalists in Maiduguri.

He stated this in a statement issued on Sunday in Maiduguri.

According to him, Zulum’s comments focused on the need to tackle rising social vices and criminal activities capable of undermining peace and stability in the state.

Iliya said the governor had expressed concern over youths moving around with shirts bearing images of knives and clubs, stressing that his administration would not allow such activities to threaten public order.

He recalled that Borno had witnessed increased cases of gangsterism, kidnapping of underage girls, illegal abortions, phone snatching and other social vices following the Boko Haram insurgency.

He said the state government subsequently established an Anti-Vices security outfit to address the challenges.

According to him, the initiative has contributed to improved security in Maiduguri and its environs.

Iliya said Zulum did not mention ADC, the #TinubuMustGo group or any opposition party during the media engagement.

He urged political actors to exercise restraint and avoid politicising peace and security issues, particularly in view of Borno’s history of insurgency.

He said maintaining peace and stability was essential for all political parties to conduct campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
