Atiku Condemns National Assembly’s Exorbitant Salaries, Allowances
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, for disregarding the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC) in determining its salaries and allowances.
In a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibeh, Atiku expressed concern over the exorbitant pay packages of lawmakers, particularly in a country facing poverty, hunger, and insecurity.
Atiku’s remarks followed Senator Sumaila Kawu’s disclosure of his N21 million monthly allowances, sparking public outrage and confirming allegations of unilaterally set remuneration.
Atiku emphasized that RMFAC, not the National Assembly, is responsible for setting salaries and allowances. He urged RMFAC to assert its authority and ensure the law is followed.
Atiku linked the recent #EndBackGovernanceProtest to growing discontent among Nigerians, fueled by the widening gap between the political elite and the masses. He described the extravagant pay packages as a stark contrast to the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians.
“It’s the responsibility of the RMFAC to implement the law as it relates to fixing the salaries and allowances of public officials,” Atiku said.
