Arewa Youths Fault Minister Momoh’s ‘Illegal’ Appointments of Development Commission Chairmen
By Ahmed Ahmed
The Arewa Youths for the Sustenance of Democracy and Good Governance (AYSDGG) has condemned the unilateral appointment of chairmen for Regional Development Commissions by the Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh.
Addressing a press conference on Monday in Bauchi, the group’s Coordinator, Mr. Aliyu Musa, flanked by Secretary Lawal Abdullahi and other officials, described the action as “illegal, unconstitutional, and a violation of due process.”
They specifically rejected the appointment of Hon. Lawal Sama’ila Abdullahi Yakawada as chairman of all commission boards under the ministry, insisting that such powers rest solely with the President, subject to Senate confirmation.
“The commissions were established by law, and until those laws are amended by the National Assembly, no minister has the authority to act outside their provisions,” Musa said, stressing that the move undermines separation of powers and federal character principles.
The group urged President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to call the minister to order, warning that bypassing due process erodes transparency and accountability.
They further demanded that Mr. Momoh rescind the appointments or face legal action.
