The Taimako Community Development Initiative (TCDI), in collaboration with the Cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for Peace (COFP), has organized a one-day awareness campaign on gender-based violence (GBV) in Azbak community, Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The campaign, themed “Adjusting Perception and Awareness on Gender-Based Violence, Prevention and Response,” aimed to empower the community to address GBV issues and develop local response mechanisms.

The initiative sought to foster community ownership of the process, encouraging open discussions about the causes and nature of GBV within their specific social context.

A community gatekeeper, in his opening remarks, stressed the importance of collective responsibility in preventing GBV.

He called on parents to prioritize the basic needs and education of their children, particularly girls, whom he described as “the foundation of a brighter community.”

Religious leaders also played a crucial role in the dialogue. The local Imam urged youths and commercial tricycle (Keke Napep) operators to respect the rights and dignity of women and girls.

He emphasized that while religion promotes marriage, it must be conducted through proper channels, condemning the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

Representatives of the vigilante group highlighted the need for united action against GBV perpetrators. They acknowledged the challenge of dealing with parents who shield their children involved in such crimes and stressed the importance of community solidarity in addressing these issues.

The dialogue yielded significant outcomes, including a shift in community practices, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs regarding GBV response services.

A safeguarding committee was also established to ensure the provision of quality GBV response services within the community.

Dr. Zara Yusuf, who provided an overview of the session, commended the community for their active participation and commitment to tackling GBV.

She emphasized the need for sustained efforts and collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the protection and empowerment of women and girls in Azbak.
