No fewer than 5,000 applicants on Saturday turned out for screening and examination in Potiskum, Yobe State, under the fully funded foreign scholarship scheme sponsored by Senator Ibrahim Bomai.

The scholarship programme, which attracted over 7,650 applicants from across Yobe South Senatorial District, is part of the ongoing educational intervention of Bomai Educational Trust Fund.

Chairman of the screening committee, Prof. Mohammed Munkaila made this known in Potiskum while addressing newsmen.

He lauded the initiative and described it as commendable effort aimed at complementing the education drive of the Yobe Government.

“This is a remarkable gesture from Senator Bomai, and I call on other stakeholders to emulate his commitment to human capital development,” Munkaila said.

Although the exact number of candidates to be sponsored was not disclosed, the professor explained that the selection would be based on merit and performance in the screening and examination processes.

He further appealed to other senators and influential individuals in the state to work together in ensuring the passage of a bill currently before the National Assembly, sponsored by Senator Bomai, for the establishment of a Federal University of Education, Science and Technology in the state.

“Given the growing number of students seeking educational opportunities, I also want to call on the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to establish a study centre in Potiskum to accommodate more learners,” he added.

Munkaila revealed that Senator Bomai had also pledged to support final-year students from the district with stipends to assist in typing and binding their projects.

He also noted that plans were underway to extend scholarship support to students studying within Nigeria.

Our Correspondent reports that the large turnout of applicants for the screening exercise was a reflection of the pressing demand for educational support among youths in the senatorial zone.
