The people of Gombe State and indeed Nigeria have been thrown into mourning following the passing of elder statesman and distinguished public servant, Alhaji Ahmed Gana Abubakar, popularly known as “AE” and revered with the traditional title of Dallatun Gombe. He died on April 6.

A man of profound intellect and unwavering commitment to nation-building, Alhaji Abubakar was celebrated for his humility, moral integrity, and dedication to service. Fondly nicknamed “Excellent” in his school days, he embodied the qualities of brilliance, compassion and leadership throughout his life.

His career began in the service of the Northern Nigerian Government before transitioning to the Federal Civil Service in the late 1960s, where he served in several ministries including Defence, Education, Trade and the Department of Customs and Excise.

One of his most defining contributions was during the establishment of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in 1977, where he played a pivotal role in staffing and laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy. As head of Personnel, he was instrumental in designing and implementing a staffing framework that brought in dedicated professionals to drive the oil and gas sector forward.

During the 1980s, he served as Commissioner for Finance in Bauchi State, instituting far-reaching reforms in fiscal management that improved budgeting and revenue generation. His initiatives translated into tangible infrastructural and social development for the people of the state.

In addition to his service in the finance sector, Alhaji Abubakar also held the position of Commissioner for Trade and Industry in Bauchi State. He was part of the team that conceptualised and implemented key industrial projects such as ALIND Nigeria Limited and the Zaranda Hotel Complex, positioning the state as an emerging investment hub at the time. His tenure also saw the expansion of Asbestos Nigeria Limited.

Before the end of the Second Republic, Alhaji Abubakar joined the Nigeria External Telecommunications Limited (NET), playing a vital role in the merger that created the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL). His work in advancing Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure helped bridge communication gaps across the nation.

Beyond his many public service roles, Alhaji Abubakar was a philanthropist and man of the people, whose life was marked by generosity and empathy. Known for extending help to the less privileged and supporting friends and classmates, he left a legacy of kindness and human dignity.

Alhaji Abubakar maintained strong relationships across Nigeria and was a symbol of unity and patriotism. His death is considered a great loss not only to Gombe State but to the entire nation.

The people of Gombe and all who knew him take solace in the enduring legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of service, excellence, and humanity.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, associates and the government and people of Gombe State. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
