The Bauchi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing recurring flood disasters in vulnerable communities through sustainable engineering and environmental interventions.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Transport, Engr. Mohammed Hamisu Garba, stated this during an assessment visit to flood-affected areas in Gajin Dunguri Community, Alkaleri Local Government Area.

Garba led a team of engineers on an on-the-spot assessment following directives by Gov. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed to evaluate the impact of flooding in affected communities.

He said the governor was concerned about the destruction caused by flooding to lives, farmlands, roads, drainage systems and other critical infrastructure.

According to him, the assessment is part of the administration’s efforts to provide lasting solutions to environmental and infrastructural challenges facing residents across the state.

Garba said the governor had directed the ministry to assess the extent of damage and recommend both immediate and long-term measures to prevent future occurrences.

He explained that the team inspected damaged culverts, drainage channels, erosion-prone areas and affected roads to facilitate the preparation of a comprehensive technical report for government action.

The permanent secretary assured residents of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property through flood control projects, drainage expansion, erosion management and road rehabilitation programmes.

He urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways and drainage channels, noting that blocked drains contributed significantly to flooding during heavy rainfall.

Some community leaders and residents commended the governor for the prompt intervention and appealed for the speedy implementation of recommended flood control measures to prevent further destruction in the area.
