The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) has fixed June 6, 2026, for local government elections in the state.
Mr Mohammed Grema Nguru, Permanent Member I of the commission, disclosed this on Wednesday in Damaturu at a political parties and stakeholders’ meeting.
Nguru said the election would cover chairmen and councillors in the 17 local government councils of Yobe State.
He said Gov. Mai Mala Buni had approved the conduct of the elections by the commission.
Nguru solicited the support of media practitioners to ensure effective dissemination of electoral information to voters across the state.
He also urged security agencies to ensure adequate security at all polling units before, during and after the elections.
The permanent member appealed to stakeholders to advise the commission on vulnerable areas to avert any security challenges.
Nguru said political parties would be issued election guidelines to enable them present credible candidates capable of delivering good governance at the grassroots.
He reiterated that the commission would organise, undertake and supervise the elections to ensure they were free, fair, credible and peaceful.
According to him, all eligible residents of the state can contest, provided they meet constitutional and electoral requirements.
Nguru said chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old, while councillorship candidates must be at least 25 years old, without gender bias.
He added that contestants must be sane, not bankrupt, resident in the local community, possess a school certificate or equivalent and pass security screening.
Nguru said nomination forms would cost N300,000 for chairman, N250,000 for vice-chairman and N200,000 for councillor.
In their remarks, representatives of security agencies assured stakeholders that the elections would be conducted peacefully without security threats.
