Supporters across Yobe State have rallied behind Sen. Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, urging him to contest the 2027 governorship election.

The call was made during a gathering organised by the Yobe East Solidarity Movement, which drew political leaders, elders and youths from different parts of the state.

A former Commissioner for Water Resources in Yobe, Alhaji Ibrahim Salihu Bakabe, said the movement reflected a longstanding struggle for equitable political representation.

Bakabe noted that similar efforts were made during the late Gov. Mamman Ali, adding that the current agitation was driven by the need to deepen inclusion in governance.

He said Yobe East had not produced a governor, arguing that the zone deserved the opportunity to lead the state in 2027.

Bakabe stressed that the initiative was still at an early stage and focused on consultation, persuasion and unity rather than confrontation.

He said the supporters intended to engage stakeholders across the state to promote Bomai’s record, capacity and vision for governance.

Also speaking, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, Pioneer Secretary of the Bomai Support Group, said the event was organised independently by the Yobe East Solidarity Movement.

Mohammed said the call was youth-driven and based on Bomai’s legislative performance and constituency projects during his first and second terms in the Senate.

He described Bomai as a people-oriented leader with extensive experience in public service, noting his 35 years as a civil servant before joining politics.

Mohammed said Bomai’s emergence as Chairman of a Senate committee in his second term reflected his leadership qualities and understanding of governance.

He added that Bomai’s electoral victory in 2019, where he defeated an incumbent senator by a wide margin, marked a turning point in Yobe East politics.

According to him, Bomai’s six years in the Red Chamber had redefined senatorial representation through projects and effective advocacy.

On power rotation, Mohammed said political arrangements were part of democratic practice, adding that rotation would promote fairness among the state’s zones.

An elder of the movement from Zone A, Alhaji Muhammed Gordi, said Bomai’s contributions to development made him suitable for the governorship, despite zonal differences.

Gordi said leadership should be based on competence and service delivery rather than geographical origin alone.

Similarly, a member of the Bomai Yobe East Solidarity Movement, Mr Abba Soso Geidam, said the group was formed to project Bomai as a credible governorship candidate.

Geidam cited road construction and other constituency projects executed by the senator as evidence of his capacity to govern the state effectively.

He expressed confidence that Bomai’s experience of about eight years in the Senate positioned him as a strong contender for the 2027 election.
